Before you go

Nepal travel guide.

A practical introduction to seasons, culture, money, health and everyday travel in Nepal.

01

Best time to visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the classic trekking seasons. Winter offers clear skies and quieter lower-altitude trails, while the summer monsoon is well suited to rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang.

02

Culture and etiquette

  • Greet people with “Namaste”
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and many temples
  • Walk clockwise around Buddhist monuments
  • Ask before photographing people or ceremonies
  • Use your right hand when giving or receiving
03

Money and connectivity

The Nepalese rupee is the local currency. Cards are common in major cities but cash is essential on remote routes. Mobile coverage and lodge Wi-Fi are available in many trekking regions but should not be expected everywhere.

04

Altitude and health

Build acclimatization into high-altitude itineraries, stay hydrated and tell your guide about symptoms early. Travel insurance should cover the highest elevation in your itinerary and emergency evacuation.

05

Permits and local support

Protected areas and restricted regions require different permits. HAN arranges the permits included in your confirmed itinerary and explains what documents to bring.
